Springfield’s first fleet of gasoline powered fire engines on May 4th 1913.

The Springfield Fire Department took possession of it's very first fleet of gasoline powered fire engines on May 4th 1913. The new fire fighting equipment was put on public display, May 10,1913. On June 9th, 1913 there was a major fire on the square, that started in the Heer's building and leveled all the buildings on the south of St Louis Street at the time. These new fire trucks were not used to fight this major fire because the firemen did not how to pull out the chokes when they tried to start the engines. The old Heer's building stood where the Fox Theater was which is part of the Springfield History Museum now.
